What is the longest time that I can live with HIV without getting sickness but staying healthy even when I do not have medicine? (Thomas)

Response from Mr Munyaneza Gregory

It is impossible to determine the exactly time someone with HIV will start getting sick. It will all depend on his or her body’s immune system.

Substituting maturbation for sex because of HIV/AIDS fear

July 6, 2009 · 1 Comment

So, if sex is bad because of HIV/AIDS is masturbation good because since I am playing only with myself there is no one to infect me? (Nvanungi)

Response from Mr Munyaneza Gregory

Please do not be  mistaken, sex is not bad, sex becomes dangerous when done at the  wrong time and in inappropriate ways like unprotected sex with HIV infected persons or with  persons suffering from STDs. Even if the masturbation doesn’t have harmful side effects, its habit can lead to the serious sexual life problems like not being attracted by the opposite sex and sexual  selfishness

STARHS?

June 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

What is STARHS? (Belinda, Masese Girls School)

Response from Mr Malime Michael

The standard HIV antibody test tells whether or not a person is infected with HIV, not when they were infected. The CDC has developed the Serologic Testing Algorithm for Recent HIV Seroconversion (STARHS) to determine whether people with HIV may have been infected recently (within the past year). STARHS uses two enzyme immunoassays (EIAs): a standard HIV EIA that is sensitive to low levels of HIV antibodies and a modified, less sensitive (LS) HIV EIA that is less sensitive to low levels of HIV antibodies. Specimens that react to the more sensitive (standard) EIA, but not on the less sensitive EIA, indicate a lower level of HIV antibodies and therefore likely to represent a newer infection.

STARHS was developed to look at HIV infection in groups

Between men and women, who have higher chances of getting HIV?

June 5, 2009 · 3 Comments

Is it true that women have more chances of getting infected with HIV/AIDS than men? My friend told me so. (Christine Naggayi)

Response from Dr. Brondi Luciana

Dear Christine

It is true, in a sexual intercourse between a woman and a man, the woman is more likely to be infected by the men than the men by the woman. This is true for vaginal and oral sex and especially for anal sexual intercourse.
